Winter may be here, but SCA (NSW) continues to glow with warmth, momentum and renewed energy.
At the beginning of the month, we were pleased to welcome Mr Michael Longhurst to the SCA (NSW) Board. Michael has been appointed to fill the vacant Strata Manager Chapter position following an expression of interest process that attracted a strong field of high-quality candidates. We thank everyone who put themselves forward to serve on the Association Board.
It’s also been an exciting month for strata recognition in the wider community. I proudly congratulate two of the industry’s most influential figures and life members of SCA (NSW), Peter Clisdell OAM and the late Phillip Duggan OAM, who have been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours List.
With housing affordability one of the most significant issues facing the NSW economy, SCA (NSW) continues to meet with NSW Members of Parliament in the lead-up to the NSW Budget on 23 June. Alongside the potential introduction of legislation on insurance commissions later this year, the NSW Government has commissioned an options paper examining alternatives to the current Emergency Services Levy (ESL).
Unfortunately, NSW remains the only mainland Australian state to rely on an insurance-based levy, while other jurisdictions have transitioned to property-based models. SCA (NSW) firmly believes a fairer and more equitable funding model is needed to help reduce insurance costs for strata owners, and that reform is long overdue.
June remains a significant month on the strata calendar, marking the conclusion of the 2025–26 education cycle. It has been our busiest education cycle ever, and I encourage all members to carefully review the weekly updates issued by the SCA (NSW) Education Team. These communications contain important information regarding upcoming courses, compliance requirements and key deadlines.
All Class 1 and Class 2 members are reminded that, to satisfy their 2025–26 CPD requirements, they must complete the Commissions, Disclosures and Fiduciary Duties course. This is in addition to completing the three NSW Fair Trading compulsory topics, meeting any Professional Standards Scheme education obligations and, for Class 1 members, attending a Strata Business Leaders Forum. The final forum for the cycle will be held on 23 June for those who have not yet attended.
